…”Do you still work, or, are you retired”?
First of all, I was stunned.
The person who asked, let’s call him Scott, at least twenty five years younger than me, but let me say, I can keep up with the young guys, saw the shock on my face.
Then not knowing how to walk the question back, doubled down with, “I mean, a lot of the old guys I know are retired.”
Scott meant no harm, and I think he was on his way to a compliment, he just never got there.
We laughed about it and then I thought, how many people my age, sixty and over, are looking forward to doing nothing in terms of retirement.
There is so much more to life.
So much more to learn, to discover.
Avi Socho, one of my favorite historical figures, did not even know what he was to do with his life, until he was eighty years old.
Then wnet on to be one of the greatest military and political strategists as recorded in many literature accounts.
But not toward retirement.
