An Everyday Expression of Hope and Its Potential

An Everyday Expression of Hope

Without True Sight

July 8, 2020 by John Hembree Leave a Comment

In a recent gathering, someone asked this question, “Which of your five senses would you give up temporarily?  And why?”

Interesting question.

As those gathered answered, there were some answers you might expect, others certainly unexpected, some funny, some not.

I love questions like these, except I am often disappointed as to how little thought they are truly given throughout our lives.

When it came my turn, my answer was, “My sight, so that I might see more clearly.”

An honest answer.

Years ago, I had the opportunity to sit with someone who was blind from birth.

I knew the question I wanted to ask them and they knew the question I wanted to ask them.

And eventually we got around to it.

“You have been blind from birth, what do you see?”

And from that question came the realization of who was actually blind.

It was me.

I had failed to distinguish colors.

I had looked beyond true beauty.

Interesting that the quote says, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

It is not in the form of that which we behold.

My limited sight saw the big picture and missed the wonderful details which made the big picture possible.

It was as though my eyes had been opened for the first time…by one who could not see.
