An Everyday Expression of Hope and Its Potential

An Everyday Expression of Hope

No Less Than Perfect

June 17, 2020 by John Hembree 2 Comments

Why We're Not Good EnoughIn 2000, my family decided to have a home built. We wanted it to be perfect.

However, I had never had a home built before, and had a lot of questions for the builder throughout the process.

Too many questions it turns out.

Near the completion of construction, the builder and I were on the deck, and I was complaining about a seam where one board did not match the other perfectly.

It was totally stupid on my part.

It simply did not matter.

As I complained, the builder had enough and he said, “My gosh John!!  There’s only been one perfect carpenter in history, and his name was Jesus Christ!”

I immediately realized how unimportant my complaint was, and laughed and apologized.

The builder was right.  It essentially was a perfect deck of which we perfectly enjoyed for over ten perfect years.

What inspired this thought is that last night, a friend of ours came by our house, and as we were talking, we each, for some reason, began to tell each other what our faults were, how we were far less than perfect.

In our eyes, in different areas of our lives, we simply did not measure up.

But interestingly enough, neither of us stated that was how we thought God saw us.

As less than perfect.

That was how we saw ourselves.

I would encourage you to do something that is, at times, extremely difficult.

To look at yourself, and for me to look at myself, as God sees us.

We often see ourselves as to what we are not.

God sees us as what we are, His perfect creation, made in His image.

“O God, you have declared me perfect in your eyes…”  Psalm 4:1

This is great. What a reminder. I emailed this to everyone. I also appreciate the no perfect carpenters point. We will pay someone to do something for us at home because we cannot do it ourselves but then I find every little wrinkle or wiggle in line. I will try to remember how unimportant my complaints can be.
