An Everyday Expression of Hope and Its Potential

An Everyday Expression of Hope

Within Each Of Us

May 27, 2020 by John Hembree Leave a Comment

Within each us is the capacity to love, to hate, to bring pleasure and to bring pain. Within each of us.

Recently, I asked a friend, “Why is it, that when we finally begin to understand even a little about life…it is almost over?”

Forgiveness is asked for.

It is not always received.

At least without consequences.

“I forgive you, but I will not allow you to hurt me again.”

The pain generally outweighs any previous pleasure.

It lasts longer.

It goes deeper.

It is inescapable.

An ancient parable says, “That if someone asks for your forgiveness seven times, to not only forgive them those seven times, but seventy times seven.”

Four hundred and ninety times.

All of this is beyond my ability to discern if we are born with these capacities.

I am aware that we are, I am, capable of each, however.

Therein lies the problem.

To love as we long to be loved.

To give more than we receive.

To forgive and be forgiven.

The heart grows heavy.

The chance once more to bring pleasure where we have brought much pain.
