An Everyday Expression of Hope and Its Potential

An Everyday Expression of Hope

Revealing Who You Are…

January 11, 2020 by John Hembree 1 Comment

Being an amateur student of body language, writing samples, etc., I began the experiment.

Gathering as many signatures from co-workers as I could, and from a non-scientific perspective I would determine if their signature gave an indication as to their personality.

Approaching my co-workers and asking them to sign their name as they would on any given day.

I would hand them a note card and a pen.

My goal was to simply acquire their signature.

I gathered maybe forty.

Except for one, all turned the note card over to see what was on the other side.

Except for one, all either asked regarding or made a comment regarding my intent.

Once I explained I was taking a survey, using their signature, they were happy to participate.

Not one refused, which I found surprising.

Maybe I appear to be a trusting soul.

The signatures varied as you might imagine.

Some small and conservative.

Some large and swirling.

Don’t confuse that by the way, with male or female.

That was not always the case.

Some were very business like, straight on.

Once I gathered an across the board selection of signatures, I went to someone within the company that had been in the organization for some time and had interacted with each person at some level.

I would ask them to describe the personality of a specific individual, then after hearing it, I would lay that particular person’s signature down in front of them.

It was very interesting how close their signature reflected their personality.

The more reserved signatures matched the more reserved personalities.

The signatures with a little more “flair” also dictated those who were more outgoing, but yet not wanting to overwhelm someone of whom they would meet for the first time.

Then there were those, whose signature, was bold, swirling and rolling.

Their signature stated, “This is who I am, and I like who I am.  I want you to like me also, but if you do not like me, it will not hinder me liking me.”

Then there was, “the one”.

This person never looked at the opposite side of the note card, they did not question my motive.

They were more than happy to give me their autograph.

We laughed about it a day or so later.

It was as though they were a celebrity and giving their autograph was part of their daily routine.

I loved it!

Confidence.

You cannot get enough, have enough or keep enough confidence.

Where did this exercise come from?

From an eighteen year old’s signature.

I worked out the details on this exercise with my college freshman daughter at the time.

Her signature said to me, “I am looking for who I am in this life, and as I am working this out, I am going to stay kinda out of the way and smaller until I figure it out.”

I said to her, “Suzanne, people will pick up signals from your handwriting regarding who you think you are, and how they should approach and view you.”

Develop your confidence and develop your signature and you will discover who you are through the process.

Practice your signature.

Develop it as you develop.

Be confident…Be bold…Be you.
