“Sometimes love is stronger than a man’s convictions.” Isaac Baslovis Singer – Nobel Prize Winner in Literature – 1978
I have read this quote over and over again.
And I am not sure I understand it.
Not fully, not completely.
I have always seen myself as, at least hopefully, a man of convictions.
And if I understand the word correctly, that few forces can outweigh convictions.
But then the Bible says that between faith, charity and love, the greatest of these is love.
And yet Singer writes that,” Sometimes love is stronger…”
When are those times?
What type of love is stronger?
In what instance does love become a greater force than the convictions of the heart?
But then wait, doesn’t love come from the heart?
The subject of convictions can become quite complex.
The following verse helped me considerably.
“And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.” I Corinthians 13:3
A verse of strong conviction.
But If I do not have love and only have conviction then I have gained nothing and lost everything.
Then that might lead me to believe the following as quoted by Erica Jong regarding love, “If you don’t risk everything, you risk even more.”
