An Everyday Expression of Hope and Its Potential

An Everyday Expression of Hope

If Anything…Doubt Reality

August 20, 2015 by John Hembree 2 Comments

doubtEight o’clock on a Thursday evening, both my wife and I, tired and hungry.

Where do you end up if you live in the south?

Waffle House of course.

T-Bone steak for me with double eggs and other stuff for her.

Our server, Cyan.

Very bright, extremely articulate, I incorrectly guessed she was in college, when I asked if she was in school.

I incorrectly guessed again when I asked if she was a Senior in high school.

Cyan is a Junior in the local area and taking a dual load of high school and college courses, with enough credits already to enter her freshman year in college.

I then began to ask her about her future course of study, her dreams and her hopes.

Cyan expressed she wanted to be an obstetrician, “I want to deliver beautiful little babies.”, she said.

After our meal, we were preparing to leave and I asked Cyan where she wished to complete her undergraduate studies.

Proudly, and confidently she said, “UCLA.”

I then asked her where she wanted to attend Medical School.

She thought for a moment but did not name a school, except to say, “I don’t know.”

However, I did not believe that she did not know.

She knew.

With her co-workers gathered around listening I said, “Cyan, if someone were to walk in here right now, and say, “Cyan, choose any Medical School in the world and you can go there, what would you say?”

She immediately said, “Kings College in London.  But it is way too expensive, I could never go there.  That’s just reality.”

It was then I said, “Cyan, why do you doubt?  Why do you not believe?  God does not care about the reality of the situation. Believe Cyan.”

And with that, we walked out.

More than likely, I will never see Cyan again.

Our paths may never cross once more.

However, I can only hope I have planted a small seed in the heart of a young woman who’s goal it is, in life, “to deliver beautiful little babies.”

“All that’s required is that you really believe and have no doubt.”  Matthew 11:23

It’s no wonder people DOUBT themselves in today’s world where the most popular TV shows are “reality” shows of the down and out and the ones getting arrested–exploiting the mistakes and bad choices people make. Its when you surround yourself with positive people, making positive statements that you can believe what was “impossible”. Even as Christians we sometimes forget the blessings the Lord has for us. but we only need to go back to the Word of God for a reminder. THAT’s the true reality–God’s love for us!!
