The text read like this.
“So let me ask you. I’ve been thinking cause we’ve been talking about it lately. I feel like my purpose here on earth is to make people laugh and entertain others. Is that not a reasonable thought? It just seems like a small purpose, but maybe God will use that for something big someday.”
My response? “It is reasonable and that is a HUGE purpose.”
Any of us could have written that text to someone else. Not all of us have the desire and certainly the gift to make people laugh or to entertain others, but all of us have the need to define our purpose and mission for our life. Much has been said and many books have been written on this subject which gives me the clue that people want to know where they fit in.
One of my favorite authors, Os Guiness, in his book, The Call, puts it this way. “The truth is not that God is finding us a place for our gifts but that God has created us and our gifts for a place of his choosing – and we will only be ourselves when we are finally there.”
Many have struggled with the following questions.
We each have been given a limited amount time on this earth, how do we spend it?
We each have a unique wiring schematic that God has designed within us, what is it and how do we use it?
How does the skill set that God has given you allow you to serve God by serving others?
All valid questions though the answers are not always easy to find.
Let’s allow the words of King David to bring some peace to our struggle as to where we fit into God’s overall plan.
“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mothers’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Excerpts from Psalm 139
Like Isaac who said in the text, “it seems like a small purpose”…there is no small purpose to God. It is huge and it matters because it mattered enough to God for Him to create you as He did.
If your gift is to make people laugh and entertain then do just that.
If your gift is to write and encourage, then do that.
If your gift is to bake items and give them away so that you may brighten the life of another, how can any of those be a small purpose?
They can’t and they aren’t.
Space does not allow for me to list the number of not small purposes to God.
Bringing a cup of water to a king or a prophet in the Bible was no small purpose.
God wired you just like He wired you.
Let that profound thought sink in. Write it down somewhere.
I will do it right now like this. God wired me just like He wired me.
Since one can never get enough Os Guiness quotes I thought I would end with this.
“Our gifts and destiny do not lie expressly in our parents’ wishes, our boss’s plans, our peer group’s pressures, our generation’s prospects, or our society’s demands. Rather, we each need to know our own unique design, which is God’s design for us.”
