One of my fellow retail associates and I began to converse with a vendor who was visiting the store.
This is how the conversation went.
Me: “How long have been with your company?”
She: “Right at five years. I began doing this after finishing seminary.”
Me: “Where did you attend seminary?”
She: “Columbia.”
Me: “Just curious. What makes your heart beat faster?”
She: “Theological interpretation.”
Me: “But why did God put you on this earth and put life within you?”
She: “I don’t know.”
Me: “May I be very personal with you? I do not believe you. I believe you know exactly why.”
Immediately the dam broke.
She began to cry and stared at me.
Me: “I honest to goodness believe you already know what it is.”
She: “I don’t like you.”
She walked away and went back to her work.
It is certainly not the first time that someone has said they do not like me.
In this case though, they did not like me because I had hit a nerve.
It was a root canal with no preceding novocaine.
Awkward and uncomfortable?
Yes.
But not for me.
Within each of us lies a destiny we can not deny nor run from.
It tracks us down as a hunter tracks his prey.
We can not escape.
It is impossible to escape.
