An Everyday Expression of Hope and Its Potential

An Everyday Expression of HopeĀ

God At Work At Publix

September 21, 2012 by John Hembree Leave a Comment

He was old, not really, but eighty is up there.

He was quite engaging as he bagged up my groceries at Publix. I found him extremely interesting so I asked him a question before I left.

“Tell me the secret, I really want to know, where does true peace come from?”

He summed it up in nine words. It was quite the coincidence that I have been looking for nine word phrases.

His words were these, “Two souls bound together can not be torn apart.”

He had a glow, a true twinkle in his eye as he said it.

My final exchange with him was this, as he thanked me for shopping at Publix. I asked, “May I ask you a final but personal question?”

He said, “Yes you can, be quick, I am eighty years old with not much time left.”

It was this. “Have you found true peace in your life?”

His smile lessened and his eyes became slightly wet.

He said, “Young man, I did, and she is gone now.”

I thanked him for the insight, walked to my car and thought of a quote I read in the last few days that said, “Listen to those who are old and wise, for theirs is the vastness of knowledge and all things beautiful.”
