When I am pumping gas I have to end the pump with an amount which ends in numbers divisible by 5. Not the dollar amount just the cents portion. I will continue to pump cent by cent until I get to a number 0, 5 or 10. When I am in a car which has an interior temperature setting I can only have it set to a number that is divisible by 2. Has to be. I have gone back to a door seven times to make sure it was locked. I have put the plug of a coffee pot in my hand and pressed the end of the plug into my thumb leaving an imprint so that I knew by looking at the imprint that the coffee pot could no longer be on. When I am channel surfing I can only go up in the sequence, never down. Quirky? Yes. Are there doctors for this type of thing? Again, yes. And I know some of them and have spent some time with one of my “special friends”. And that’s okay.
Does this make me a bad person? Or does it make me a person who in specific situations has a keen eye for details which is good.
Psalm 139 says, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” And so are you.
What are your quirks? Oh, you have them. You may not list some of them as I did, but they are there. List out of a few and then show them to a close friend. Entitle the list before giving it to them with the title, “That’s who I am.” See how they respond. Do they accept you and your quirks? Or, will they view you and your quirks from a distance.
We often accept the friendship of others because they accept us. Except they do not accept who we really are, they accept who we have portrayed ourselves to be. Break out that list the next time you are at a gathering and show it to a few people. Then see how accepting they are of you and your issues.
Actually, this could be a fun exercise. Try this with a college age group some time. Have each of them make a list of odd behaviors that they exhibit from time to time. Collect them and then read them to the group without any names being involved. It will give each of them a better idea that we all are unique.
Now, on your own, make a list of your strangest and maybe even darkest characteristics. Now place that list before God and see if he rejects you. He won’t. In fact, God will bring you even closer because of your transparent approach. You will never commit any act or have any thought that God can not get past if you are willing to lay it before him.
And as you lay the list before God, say this as part of your prayer, “God, that’s who I am…now make me who You want me to be.”
You will be amazed as to what happens next.
