Last night was interesting to say the least. Without going into detail I was disturbed by circumstances around me that I felt were not in my control. Basically, I did not understand the circumstances nor their effect upon my life.
My cousin-in-law and I were going to grab a late bite to eat and ended up at a local Subway. As we sat at the table I asked him to pray over the food.
I always listen pretty intently to the prayers of others, and, here is what I heard.
“God, for this food and for this day we thank you. Help us with that which we understand and help us with that which we do not. Amen”
That short prayer got my attention and I have been thinking about that phrase all day. All that we do not understand.
The list would probably be longer of which we do not understand as opposed to that which we do.
Each of us have circumstances in our lives that as hard as we try, it just does not become clear to us. In whatever area that might be.
A great verse says, “Man’s steps are ordained by the LORD, How then can man understand his way?” Proverbs 20:24
Which says to me that God definitely orders our steps which I believe. But is also says we may not understand them.
Which brings me back to the prayer at Subway. Help us with that which we do not understand.
Take a moment to reflect on those things in your life that just seems hard to understand.
Maybe God is just waiting on a quiet moment with you to give you a much clearer understanding of your circumstances.
