It happened so fast and in such an odd way that it had to be God.
About eleven years ago, (I can not remember the exact year), I went after church to a local hospital to check on a friend and fellow member. Not finding him in his room I learned he was not there due to some tests he was undergoing. I left a note and turned to leave. As soon as I exited his room and stepped into the hallway I was standing in front of an elderly black woman much shorter than I. I apologized for almost running into her. The next few minutes changed my life.
You know when God is getting ready to do something big and every bell and whistle goes off inside of you? This was one of those times.
This is how the conversation went right in the middle of the hospital hallway.
Her: Young man, are you a minister?
Me: No ma’am. Just a person. But aren’t we all ministers? (I was trying to be funny but not successfully.)
Her: Young man, you will have the blood on your hands of all those you come in contact with and do not minister to from this point forward. Do you understand what I am telling you?
Me: Yes ma’am I do.
She then took my hands into hers and prayed a strong passionate prayer in the middle of the hallway without any hesitation. She hugged me and walked away.
As we humans do, we always try to go back and reconstruct what God did. I went back to the hospital a few times to see if I could find her and thank her and get more information. God had said all He needed to say and He would say no more, at least not through her.
Be open today and in the next few days for God to speak. Through his written word, through others, in the quiet places of your heart, he wants to tell each of us really important stuff about our lives. He wants us to tell Him about our lives. He is all about relationship.
And by the way, He is not a coincidental kind of God. His timing is specific, direct and without error.
A friend of mine texted me a verse from his daily devotional as I was beginning to write this entry. He would have had no idea as to what I was writing about today but God’s timing is perfect.
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you.” Psalm 32:8
Another friend of mine had sent me a Facebook message earlier this morning which in fact was the inspiration for today’s entry. She was trying to make some decisions in her life and it just so happened that a life verse for her in making these important decisions was the same verse I used last night in the blog. I was excited that God had used me, God’s Jackass, to encourage her in the path she was pursuing already. Her message said, “Isn’t that incredible that you quoted the same verse in your post?”
I wrote back, “He be dat kind o God”
