GOD DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK IN A STRAIGHT LINE…

January 13, 2012 by John Hembree Leave a Comment

God does not always work in a straight line.

I wish He did.  But He doesn’t.

He moves and weaves and dips and curves, goes forward and at times backwards, and my personal least favorite direction of God, the circle.  Around and around and around we go, and where it stops only God will know.

I have often traveled in the God circle.  You seem to see the same old thing again and again and can not figure out why your life can not seem to align itself with a straight path.  To those who consider themselves religious, they would say, that He takes us by the path of His choosing and if He takes us around the mountain again and again it is only because He wishes for us to learn obedience.  It is for that type of answer that I do not typically get along real well with religious people.

An exercise. Try this. Pull up on Google some Biblical maps.  Oh I don’t know, pick the  Journey of the Children of Israel, or, pick the Journey of the Apostle Paul.  What will you see?  Few straight lines, that is what.  Circles, curves, dips and a lot of other movement that is not always straight.

The Children of Israel is my favorite.  You would think they had seen enough by the hand of God to be able to go straight to the Promised Land.  Nope.  In fact, God had to navigate them the long way around because He felt they would have feared the very enemies that He had set up for them to defeat.  Maybe you have done that as well.  I have.  To fear the very thing that God had assured you that you will overcome.  But we do it.

And here we go.  Around and around and around.

One more exercise.  On a piece of paper write down something that only God could have done in your life and going backward highlight the events or people that had to line up for that miracle or event to take place.  I do this often.  Start at the present then go backward.  It would go like this.  In order for this event to happen today, then Jim would have had to email Terry who saw Carla at Kroger who just happened to have gone to school with Ms. Gayle whose daughter had a ballet class with the granddaughter of Jim fourteen years ago who brought about this wonderful event that has happened in my life fourteen years later.

Did you follow all that?  Try it.  The path of events may not make sense to you but it does to God.  How he orchestrates His will and His plan for our lives is so far beyond my ability to understand.  I just know it happens over and over and over again.

So, today, do not be frustrated, do not fear and do not change the direction of which He has pointed you.

He knows the way.   Just follow it.
