I believe that in order to truly have faith in anything at all, one must be willing to field the hard questions.
Whether these questions come from another.
Or if they come from inside ourselves.
This is the only way a person can know beyond doubt what they truly believe.
One question I think must come up in a person’s individual Christian experience is very simple.
Do I stand for something….for Him?
Or do I use the cloak of Christianity as a distraction….to make others think more highly of me….or to make me think more highly of myself?
Is it real….or is it fantasy?
And unlike the great Billy Joel, I don’t think a fantasy is ever all we need.
I’ve been asking myself these questions.
Ever since reading about the disciples’ lives after Christ’s Resurrection.
Those guys stood for something.
To the last drop of blood, they fought for the cause that is Jesus Christ.
They weren’t pretenders.
However, before I came back to Him a more than a year ago, I had begun to believe that pretenders were the status quo.
They were what one could expect in the modern Christian church.
My assumption was not completely unfounded.
Experience had been pointing me in that direction for quite a while.
But then I met a few people that have changed my mind.
John Hembree is numbered among them.
They actually stand for something.
These people were put into my life for various reasons.
One of which must be to show me and those like me that there is hope for you in Jesus Christ.
There is life without judgment, both of you and from you.
One doesn’t have to be on television every Sunday to make a difference.
They showed me this not by impressive sermons.
Not by high and mighty sanctimonious blabbering.
They did it by example.
I hope that one day, if not today, I can be viewed in that light.
It is something that we all should strive for.
If you aren’t there already.
And if you are…..keep it up.
Because in a world where the list of “role models” consists of women who at famous for sex tapes and athletes beat known for beating their rape charges….you are a much needed commodity.
